Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program (NATCEP)

Program Description

The Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program (NATCEP) is designed to prepare individuals for entry-level positions within a variety of healthcare setting including long term care facilities, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, hospitals and home setting.

Coursework will include instruction and hands-on experiences in the classroom/lab and clinical settings.   

The program emphasizes application of the theory acquired in the classroom and clinical skill development. Skills included but are not limited to providing:

  • personal care
  • assisting with activities of daily living
  • obtaining vital signs and anthropometric measurements
  • using proper body mechanics & safety measures
  • resident’s right
  • infection control

The program will also emphasize the importance of soft skill development including professionalism and personal accountability, critical thinking, customer service, multi-cultural competence, interpersonal communication/observation skills and team dynamics.  

The program utilizes a concept and competency-based curriculum that employs a variety of learning strategies to introduce, develop and master program content. These include the following:

  • lecture
  • PowerPoint
  • videos
  • discussion
  • independent study
  • practice tests
  • demonstration
  • hand-on skills practice
  • case-studies
  • role-play and simulation

Upon completion of the classroom portion of the program, students will complete an immersive hands-on practicum experience in a long-term care setting.  Graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for the state written and skills evaluation.

Program Regulation

All Certified Nurse Aide programs must be approved by the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH).  All programs are expected to utilize the Indiana Nurse Aide Curriculum that establishes the minimum course standards.  All training programs are approved based on compliance with federal regulations, state rules and administrative standards. The Certified Nurse Aide: Training, Certification & Recertification and Registration Program ensures that individuals meet both the state and federal requirements for a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) and are on the Indiana Nurse Aide Registry.  This program is administered by the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH), Consumer Services & Health Care Regulation Commission.

Admission Criteria

Applicants must meet the following criteria for admission: 

  • Be at least 17 years of age prior to start of the program. 
  • Hold a high school diploma / high school equivalency (GED) unless currently enrolled in high school or GED program
  • Successfully pass a Criminal Background Check and License Verification (if applicable)
  • Be able to perform basic reading and basic arithmetic skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division as demonstrated by successfully passing the Pre-Admission Basic Skills Assessment.
  • Be able to speak and understand the English language in both written and verbal format
  • Be in good physical, mental and emotional health.

Course Materials & Lab Supplies

All course material & lab supplies will be provided.  This includes textbook, resource binder with handouts, RCP skill card rental and disposables used for skill practice.

AHA BLS CPR Certification

Orientation day includes your AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers CPR certification.

Uniform & ID Badge

Students will receive a Cadence Healthcare Training Solutions T-Shirt, 1 set of dark gray, high quality scrubs and an ID badge to wear during clinical rotations.

Health Clearance & TB Skin Test

Cadence Healthcare Training Solutions has partnered with a local healthcare provider to perform all required physical & TB skin test at no additional charge to you!

Student Liability Insurance

For the protection of our students and the residents we will be caring for, student liability insurance is provided within our fee structure.

State Exam Fee

We cover the cost of the first attempt at the State required written and skills examination.  If unsuccessful, students must complete a remediation session and retake the exam or skill evaluation at their own expense.

What's not included?

Possible additional fees include but are not limited to site-specific vaccination/testing requirements, drug screens, class/clinical make up fees, replacement course materials, shoes, watch, optional uniform and equipment items, and/or repeat state exam fees. This list is not intended to represent an exhaustive list. Please speak with the Program Director regarding any questions related to additional fees.

Funding Options

Did you know?

If you pay for your own CNA class, there is a federal law (see 42 CFR § 483.152) that requires nursing homes to pay you back what you paid for your CNA class.  The reimbursement process varies by facility.  A copy of your receipt and proof of successful completion of the program and registry placement will be provided to assist you in the process of requesting this reimbursement.

Cadence Healthcare Training Solutions is an approved training provided with Department of Workforce Development (DWD).  Contact your local WorkOne office to see if you would be eligible for financial assistance through their training grant programs.

Orientation is mandatory on Thursday, May 30th from 1 PM - 5:30 PM.  

Course Dates

This term is 4 weeks long and runs from Monday, June 3rd to Saturday, June 29th.

Classes meet online this term with the exception of skill lab sessions and clinical rotations.

Graduation Day!

Graduation ceremony will be on Sunday, June 30th from 11 am - 1pm
